Bebel Gilberto’s dreamy song Tão Bom from her Agora album (in English: So Good from the album Now) is just the mental getaway we all need right now. In an intimate video created exclusively for Costa Brazil, the Brazilian-American bossa nova icon brings the sensual story to life. Listen in as our founder speaks to his dear friend about the rituals that get her in the performance mindset—physically and emotionally. Take notes.
FRANCISCO: I’m always curious about people’s rituals. What do you do ahead of your performances?
BEBEL: Pavarotti once instructed my mother Astrud Gilberto to have lozenges called Vocalzone before shows, to balance the vocal chords. This is a very special remedy, found at Bigelow or Boots. I start with those. Then of course I can’t ever go on stage without warming up my voice. I do a series of vocal warmups and improvisations using small parts of songs. I actually do this throughout the day. Finally, I spray on Costa Brazil Aroma before getting dressed and then do five push-ups.
FRANCISCO: What’s on your mind during the performance?
BEBEL: The people that I am singing to.
FRANCISCO: And afterwards? What does your bedtime ritual look like?
BEBEL: I love to take a bath, that’s when I really release. I light yourJungle Candleand pour Costa Brazil Kaya Body Oil into the water. That totally relaxes me. And the morning after—or any morning I can, really—I take a walk on the beach.
BEBEL: I would like to reduce drinking and hope to be alcohol-free by my birthday. I turn 60 in May! I’m practicing how to say “no” to all things bad for my health. This is especially relevant in the evenings. For instance, I’m saying no to social media and choosing a book instead. It’s so much more rewarding and relaxing. I’m also trying to meditate more and find peace of mind. I’m letting go of the clutter.
FRANCISCO: Is there a song on repeat that helps you reset?
